T2W7: Instructions for Group Journal and Animation

Instructions
  • Please use the journal template shown below to complete your group journal
  • The words in red found in the template are instructions that must be removed when you submit the group journal

Submission Mode
  • Submit your Story board and the animation materials once you have completed the filming
  • You will need to put the Group Journal and the Animation Files into a folder named GrpNo (Example: Grp01)
  • Then upload the whole folder into the  Submit Folder allocated for your class
  • Please ensure that you follow the correct file naming convention 
    • Group Journal: Class_GrpNo_Journal.pages (Example: 104_Grp01_Journal.pages)
    • Animation Files: SST_Class_GrpNo_SCNo) ( Example: SST_109_Grp01_SC01)
Deadline
  • 18 May 2011, 5pm.

T2W2 - T2W4: Group Assignment for CBL

Tasks

As mentioned during lesson, each group is required to meet after school hours and complete the following:
  • A Group Journal following the framework of Challenge Based Learning (CBL)
  • A conceptual idea of the story that delivers the message
Deadline: Term 2 Week 4

Revision of key concepts

Big Idea
A big idea is a broad concept that is important to students and provide an anchor for them to explore and learn in many ways

Example:
  • Environment, Creativity, Peace, Energy


Essential Question
An essential question is linked to the big idea and reflect what is important and interesting to the students. It helps to contextualise the big idea.   

Example:
  • How does my usage of electricity affects my community?
  • How does war impact me?

Challenge
Students have to decide and create a task or problem they wish to solve that will produce a meaningful action.


Example:
  • Reduce the usage of electricity at home
  • Improve how we communicate and share ideas

Guiding Questions / Guiding Resources / Guiding Activities
These are used to lead students to understand their challenge better. They can be books, internet links, experiments, etc

Example:
  • PUB official website on energy consumption
  • Books on commuication
  • Survey, Questionnaires, forums
  • Animation workshop
Solutions
The solution proposed should be thoughtful and actionable.

Week 9: Revision on Ideation - 4 March 2011 (1 Hour)

Learning Objectives:

  • Recall the how shape borrowing is used to create a new initial design
  • Recall what SCAMPER is
  • Recall how SCAMPER helps to refine an idea of product
Task 1 (30 Minutes)

In your ADMT Blog, create a new post titled: "Ideation",

1. Write a short description of how shape borrowing can be used to create new design. (About 50 words)

2. Write a short description of how SCAMPER is used to refine the function and appearance of an idea. (About 80 words)

Task 2 (30 Minutes)

1. Look through your friends' blog and choose 2 descriptions that explained the concepts well. Add a comment: "Good Job! :)" to these 2 posts. In the comment, also include why you felt your friends had explained well.

2. Repeat the same thing but now look for descriptions you feel needs more details. Add a comment: "You are almost there!" to these 2 posts. In the comment, also include how you felt your friends could explained it better.

Week 9: Self Assessment - 3 Mar 2011 - (1 Hour)

Learning Objectives:
  • Know what a rubric matrix is
  • To be able to formulate a rubric matrix
  • To be able to assess work based on a rubric matrix
  • To be able to improve the quality of work based on the agreed rubric matrix

Instructions

A rubric matrix is a set of criteria or statements used to describe the quality of work. An example of a rubrics matrix on product design is shown below.

We can use such a rubrics matrix to determine how well we have done our assignments or tasks.


Task 1 (Group Work) - 40 Minutes

1. Recall the important points mentioned during sketching lesson and create a rubrics matrix with these 3 criteria:
  • Line work (Hint: Draft Line, Shape Line & Outline)
  • Ideation (Hint: Use of techniques like Shape Borrowing and SCAMPER appropriate?)
  • Overall Quality (Hint: Details of the drawing, quality of the sketching, etc)
2. Share with other groups how you have determine the rubrics matrix
3. Use the rubrics to assess the following sketches from Week 8: Water Bottle individually
  • A Vase
  • A Water Bottle
  • A Tea Cup / Pot
4. Indicate the achievement level by the side of the sketch


Task 2 (Individual Work) - 20 Minutes

1. Using the rubric matrix to guide you, sketch the following objects in Week 8: Water Bottle
  • A Vase
  • A Water Bottle
2. Take a pic of the two objects you have sketched now and post it on your ADMT Personal Blog titled: "Sketching with Rubrics"

3. Write down in the same post how knowing the rubrics matrix has help you improve your sketches.

Week 9: Design Appreciation - 3 March 2011 ( 1 Hour)

Lesson Objectives:
  • To know what makes a product well designed
  • To know what makes a product poorly designed
  • Appreciate the importance of good product design
Task

1. Search online and look for 2 examples of well designed product

2. Search online and identify 2 examples of poorly designed product

3. Post the pictures in your ADMT Personal Blog titled: "Design Appreciation" and write down comments of why you felt that the product was well or poorly designed. (Hint: You can based your description on ergonomics, appearance, function, etc)

4. After you have completed, visit at least 3 of your friends' blog and comment on 2 of the designs they have chosen and whether you agreed or disagreed. You should support your stand with good reasons.

Note:
  • Remember to quote the source of the pictures you have posted.
  • Comments should be objective and constructive. No name calling or personal attacks.
  • Do not use examples from www.baddesigns.com.

Week 8: Sketching Bottles (Time: 1 Hour) - 24 Feb 2011

Learning Objective
  • To be able to sketch objects with curve-shaped profiles

Tasks

Follow the link posted on steps to sketch a simple bottle.

  1. Sketch 1 similar plastic bottle using the steps show in the post below.
  2. Sketch the following items:
  • A Vase
  • A Water Bottle
  • A Tea Cup
  • A Lamp Post
You may use the internet to source for suitable pictures to help with visualisation.


Note:
  • Remember the importance of draft, shape and out lines in your sketches
  • Each sketch should at least cover 1/3 of the A4 Sketch pad page

Week 8: Object Placement (Time: 1 Hour) - 24 Feb 2011

Learning Objectives
  • To be able to sketch the correct placement of objects in relationship to one another
  • Understand the concept of hidden details
It is important to know how to sketch objects and also where they are placed in the 3D space on paper. You will notice that some details are hidden or block by the objects in front of it. These are called hidden details.

Below are some steps to sketch objects correctly in the 3D space

Step 1: Sketch the crates for the objects in the following order (Sketch the objects furthest away from your view first).

Step 2: Sketch out the shapes of the objects in the designated crates with draft lines







Step 3. Sketch only the parts of the shapes that are not blocked/hidden (Sketch the objects closest to you first).


Tasks
  1. Sketch 3 rectangular block and place them in a random position but still close to one another
  2. Repeat this exercise 2 times, changing the position each time
  3. Repeat Task 1 with a cube, a cylinder and a pyramid ( You are allowed to decide the size of each object)
  4. Use the 3 designs you have created from the previous SCAMPER exercise and sketch how they were look when placed beside one another

Notes
  • Students may want to try more than 3 objects in the exercise to challenge themselves.
  • Always use the crating method to start your sketches

Week 7: Assignment

Tasks for students:

  1. Apply SCAMPER techniques on the products you had designed in the previous lesson. You should apply at least one transformation on the original design. You are allowed to change the shape of the original product
  2. Annotate all your sketches to explain key features or functions of the product
  3. Design a shoe rack by using recycled materials like plastic bottles, card boards, plastic cups, straws, etc. 

Please note the following:
  • All sketches must be in isometric projection
  • All sketches should take out at least 1/3 of the A4 page
  • Crating method must be used in sketching your design
  • You do not need to produce a model for Task 3
  • All sketches are to be completed by 21 Feb 2011.
